GOTS stands for Global Organic Textile Standard. GOTS was developed by leading international standard setters – the GOTS international working group. This group is comprised of four reputed member organizations, namely OTA (USA), IVN (Germany), Soil Association (UK) and JOCA (Japan). Together, they define worldwide recognized requirements that ensure organic status of textiles, from harvesting of the raw materials, through environmentally and socially responsible manufacturing up to labeling. This in turn enables manufacturers to supply their textiles made from organic fibers with one certification accepted in all major selling markets. Organic farming and environmentally and socially responsible textile processing provides credible assurance to the consumer.
Organic farming recognizes that every action has a direct and indirect impact on other people and the environment and so its aim is to minimize any negative impact whilst promoting positive ones. One example might be that they concentrate on natural ways of building soil fertility to increase productivity instead of using synthetic chemicals which might cause short term yield increases but have long term impacts on the surrounding environment.
Why GOTS? Why not?
